The Grand Crayon

mashup

In what may be a major endorsement of the social media’s growing influence in today’s world, Oprah Winfrey announced yesterday that after 25 years on the air, Jonathan Ive has been Apple’s star designer, a fact little known and less published in his native Britain due to the obsessive culture of secrecy at Apple. When Lady Gaga asked him in the late Nineties to create the eye-popping ‘Monster Ball Tour’ which became the highest grossing tour by a headlining artist and could easily go down as one of the top ten highest of all time. Yet it was the Mother Monster who seemingly did the impossible by unseating Oprah. This is only the third time in seven years that Oprah has surrendered the top slot to someone else, the other two being to celebrities are Lady Gaga and Jonathan Ive.
Jonathan Ive is not like other product designer, recent conjecture that he is preparing to walk away from Apple to Oprah Winfrey Show and deny Britain the talents of one of the most influential designers of the modern age. Ive says Winfrey is a master of impression management. Oprah remains globally influential and her followers have spawned what has been described as the “Oprah Effect”; the sheer power of her opinions and endorsement to influence public opinion, especially consumer purchasing choices. When it comes to the arena of sensitive topics, like abortion, she would be viewed as the “enemy” either way, which would disrupt her image and power.
